about

There's no shortage these days of fey-voiced singer-songwriters. So thank heavens and the lung gods for Suzannah Espie, a woman who's not afraid to sing, really sing. And yowza, can she. On her second solo album, the mainly self-penned First and Last Hotel, the former GIT gal steps away from bluegrass and country into a more soulful, gospel groove with producer Charles Jenkins, and with full throated aplomb. After the slow-burning opener Disappointment (My Old Friend) Espie lets loose with the bluesy soul of Let It Slide and a roof-raising cover of Hank Williams' and Jimmy Davis' Lonesome Whistle. Another cover here - Doug Mansfield's City Station- becomes a poignant tribute with Mansfield's recent passing. A talented cast of guests sits in: guitarist Jeff Lang, Kerri Simpson and Sarah Carroll on vocals and the Vandas' Chris Altmann on guitar, pedal steel and banjo and vocals on the powerful Preacher. This stunning album heralds Espie's arrival as a true solo star.

about

suzannah espie Melbourne, Australia

Espie’s sound is an intoxicating mix of country, folk, blues, and soul. A gentle, sweet trill that can
move grown men to tears one moment, or an Aretha-esque hellcat belt that can raise the roof the next; however she
sings it though, it’s still unmistakeably Suzannah Espie

"There aren't too many songwriters able to match meaning with melody as well as Suzannah Espie"
Charles Jenkins
